Komal Mirchandani, Founder of Sanskrit

This week on FEW Members' Corner, we would like to introduce you to Komal Mirchandani, Founder of Sanskrit, a bewitching world of Asian fashion with master couturiers from India.

Hello Komal, What inspired you to start your company?

I launched in 2002 as I had a strong hunch that Indian fashion and design was going to explode and would be loved by international fashion pages. In those days, it was impossible to find Indo-fusion daily wear so I decided to work with designers from India to create the kind of items that I would like to wear myself.

So far,  what's the most challenging part of your journey?

In the beginning, it was difficult to understand the requirements of the HK market. 90% of my clientele are either local HK people or expatriates and I had to work out how to best cater to their sensibilities. Only a small percentage of my clients are ethnic Indians or from the sub-continent.

On success

My personal success if having a happy and healthy family. Company success is having satisfied clients and suppliers. My 3 words would be "Creative, Motivated & Dedicated"

On building credibility and trust

Stay true to your commitments and ensure you follow through on your promises. If you are in doubt, convey your concerns to both your clients or your suppliers - they will appreciate your honesty.

On the top three things to consider before starting your own business…

  1. Make sure you have enough capital and plan for unforeseen circumstances.

  2. Be prepared to sacrifice time and energy - you work the hardest when you work for yourself.

  3. Ask for and listen to to advice objectively and make the best informed decision you can with all the information you have.
