Leona Lam, Founder of Lyla Lash

This week on FEW Members' Corner, we would like to introduce you to Leona Lam, Founder of Lyla Lash, a lash and beauty bar that offers a range of services to make you feel even more beautiful.

Hi Leona, we would love to learn more about your entrepreneurial journey

I was born in Southern China, however grew up most of my life in Hong Kong. I've always had an interest in art and beauty for as long as I can remember. I ran my own online store selling skin care products for 8 years and also worked at an Art Studio for children. I decided to go to cosmetology school to learn semi-permanent make up such as eyelash extension and microblading. After I got my cosmetology license, I decided to open my own salon, Lyla Lash, one year ago, located in Central. I have 4 employees at the moment.

What inspired you to start your company?

I love making people feel beautiful, especially women. However many beauty routines for women take a lot of time - so I wanted to create a beauty routine that was durable, low maintenance, and saved time for women in our busy lives! I also wanted it to be subtle yet classy, and to enhance women’s features naturally without a lot of make-up. To let women wake up to a better version of themselves, with the option to add a bolder made up look for those special occasions.

So far,  what's the most challenging part of your journey?

The most challenging part of my journey I would say is to find the perfect location for the salon in Hong Kong and choosing the right staff who are inspired by my vision and want to create something special for our clients.

On growing teams

Avoid trying to grow too fast. In the current environment, everyone talks about how much growth they are trying to achieve – however if you grow too fast without setting up the right infrastructure to grow then you run the risk of losing control and clients will ultimately suffer.

On running a business

In order to grow I’ve had to build the brand of Lyla Lash rather than building a business based on my own talents. Lyla Lash therefore is about my staff and the great service we provide rather than about myself.

On building credibility

You try and offer the best service you can provide and when things go wrong (which they often do!) you do everything in your power to rectify the problem or provide an alternative solution that shows the customer that you care about them and you want their business.

On success

Setting up Lyla Lash has allowed me to create something from scratch. I’m learning something new every day. I feel more connected with people, and I love working as part of a team. Lyla Lash has honestly made me a better person. For me, company success is about having a larger client base, but more importantly high repeat business from our clients, great reviews and my team having fun.
